One of the best ways to keep your device up to date is to buy the unlocked variant. When you buy unlocked, it means that you don’t have to wait for your carrier to get their greedy, grubby hands on the update and add all their bloatware. Of course unlocked means that you can also unlock your bootloader, install recovery, and flash whatever firmware you like, but that is a different discussion altogether. Motorola has just started to send out their soak test to select individuals of a new OTA which includes Android 5.1 for the Moto X 2nd Gen Pure Edition. Soak Tests enable Motorola to test a new update with a smaller group of people. If something goes wrong with the test they can better manage that small group of people and fix the update before releasing it to the masses. This is better than sending out an untested build to the masses and bricking everyone’s phone.
This update makes the Moto X the first device outside of the Nexus lineup to receive the 5.1 update! Motorola has been pretty good about keeping their devices up to date. There are some awesome new features with this update including notification improvements, heads up notification dismissal, quick settings menus for wifi and bluetooth, camera improvements, device protection, improvements in ART implementation, improvements in ambient display and a lengthy list of bug fixes. You can view the full Changelog here.
This update is currently only available for those of you with the Pure Edition Moto X 2nd gen, so if you have a carrier device you will be waiting a bit longer. You will also need to already be a part Motorola’s feedback network to be eligible to receive the soak test update.
