OnePlus Announces You Can Buy Their Phone

Last week we alerted you to an invitation sent out by OnePlus for an event on 4/20/2015, that happens to be today. So, what exciting announcements did OnePlus have in store for us today? It turns out they were just announcing that you can finally buy their phone, without any of the hassle and humiliation of begging for an invite. OnePlus writes on their blog:

“In our first big celebration of the One’s successful year, we are opening up sales globally for everyone, every day of the week. We have always wanted to put great products into the hands of more people. And, we now feel confident that we have matured enough to handle the increased complexity that comes along with opening up sales completely.”

OnePlus also confirmed the recent rumors that the OnePlus Two is coming Q3 2015. Unfortunately the company also announced that the invite system would be making a return for their 2015 flagship:

“Yes, the 2 will initially launch with invites. We’re committed to maintaining razor-thin margins in order to give as much value as possible back to our users, and this drastically increases our risk. The OnePlus 2 will bring the challenges that come along with a brand new product, and initially, our invite system will help us to manage that risk. It also helps us to be sure that every OnePlus 2 user gets the amazing experience that they deserve.”

While I certainly understand that OnePlus is trying to offer a flagship phone at incredibly cheap prices, there doesn’t seem to be an “amazing experience” in the invite system for anyone involved. I was lucky enough to get the OnePlus One early in the product cycle, but I saw many potential customers purchase other flagship phones because they could not buy the One as quickly as they wanted. The issue is that before many people can purchase the phone it is no longer relevant in the smartphone world. I am going to have to seriously consider whether or not I want to purchase the Two if the company does not rethink the invite process.
