Google has announced on their product forums that Android 5.1.1 has started rolling out to Android Wear devices. Several users online are reporting that the LG G Watch R and LG G Watch have already begun receiving the update.

The LG Watch Urbane shipped with the 5.1.1 update, which adds some new features for Wear. The more exciting features include wrist gestures, always-on apps, and Wi-Fi for Android Wear watches that are Wi-Fi capable. Google kindly provided a list of the watches that can take advantage of the Wi-Fi addition in 5.1.1:

  • LG Watch Urbane
  • Moto 360
  • Sony Smartwatch 3
  • Samsung Gear Live

Google usually takes their sweet time with OTAs, but it is good news that the update is on the way to everyone with a Android Wear device. I have personally been using 5.1.1 on my Urbane for a few weeks and find the wrist gestures and Wi-Fi features to be particularly convenient. The Wi-Fi has allowed me to extend battery life quite a bit when I am at the office or home most of the day. If you are interested in the new look or features of 5.1.1 check out my unboxing of the LG Watch Urbane on my Youtube channel, and look out for my full review in the next week! Anyone get 5.1.1 for their watch yet?

I fell in love with Android with the Nexus One release and realized that it was superior to iOS in all the ways I care about. I still use a Mac (and an iPhone for the camera), but my Apple tech products pale in comparison to my number of Android devices (watches, tablets, and phones). When I’m not rooting/modding one of my many Android phones or doing math/programming, you can find me taking in Phoenix Suns/Arizona Diamondbacks games in downtown Phoenix, and drinking good beer!"
