As I predicted in my Sunday Summary yesterday, OnePlus is continuing to tease out specs for the OnePlus 2. We already found out last week that the phone will use the Snapdragon 810 processor and cost more than $330. Both announcements last week were not particularly surprising. Today OnePlus took to Twitter to let everyone know that the OnePlus 2 will have USB Type-C connectivity in place of the usual micro-USB port on most Android devices. This announcement is a bit more interesting and exciting. The only other Android smartphone rumored to use USB Type-C is the Galaxy Note 5, but it won’t be announced until later this year at IFA Berlin in September.
We expect the OnePlus 2 to be announced in July, hence it would be the first Android smartphone to utilize USB Type-C. OnePlus is set to once again utilize their unpopular invite system to roll out their 2015 flagship. The invite system for the OnePlus One was a huge PR nightmare; very few were able to get their hands on the phone at launch. While I am excited about the prospect of USB C coming to Android, it remains to be seen just how many people will be able to get their hands on the OnePlus 2 early in the product cycle. Although I’m not the #1 OnePlus fan, the company does have me intrigued with today’s announcement. If OnePlus can continue announcing some surprising and exciting specs, they may be able to get legitimate hype for their flagship again this year.
