HTC One M9 Developer Edition Receiving Android 5.1

HTC-One-M9_camera

A pretty big OTA update is currently rolling out to the M9 developer edition, bringing Android 5.1 to the device. I happen to own this phone and noticed a software update was waiting for me yesterday. The update is pretty sizable at 795 MB and brings the software to version 2.6.651.11. The update has some nice improvements baked in, including:

  • Android Lollipop 5.1
  • Data Performance Improvements
  • Call Drop Improvements
  • Battery Life Enhancements
  • Temperature Management Optimization
  • Camera Enhancements

The last three bullet points are of most interest to the majority of users. The camera on the HTC is the most criticized aspect of the phone by far. If this update can improve camera quality at all it will certainly make me very happy. I haven’t noticed any issues with battery life with the M9, but better battery life is always welcome on any device. If you are rooted with a custom recovery you should unroot and flash stock recovery before downloading and taking this OTA. I am currently waiting until the holiday is over so I can go through the unroot process and grab the update.

If you are rooted without a custom recovery, you should be good to go. Let us know if you notice any better battery life or an improved camera when taking those fireworks pics tonight! Happy 4th of July to everyone celebrating here in the states!

"I am currently a researcher and Adjunct Professor at Arizona State University and Grand Canyon University. I fell in love with Android with the Nexus One release and realized that it was superior to iOS in all the ways I care about. I still use a Mac (and an iPhone for the camera), but my Apple tech products pale in comparison to my number of Android devices (watches, tablets, and phones). When I’m not rooting/modding one of my many Android phones or doing math/programming, you can find me taking in Phoenix Suns/Arizona Diamondbacks games in downtown Phoenix, and drinking good beer!"
