I finally got my hands on a Xiaomi phone. This company has been making waves in the Android community and is expected to start selling phones in the USA by 2017. Xiaomi is dominating markets like China and India and has even beat Samsung in certain quarters. Their phones are in very high demand and are pretty difficult to get your hands on. They sell all their new flagships via flash sale and as soon as phones go up they sell out. Its really very apple like.
Thanks to gearbest I was able to get my hands on the Xiaomi RedMi 2. This is not a flagship, rather it is pretty awesome budget phone. Its rocking a 4.7″ 720p display, a quad core processor clocked at 1.2Ghz, 1 GB of ram, a usable 8mp camera, and 16GB of memory. The big selling point is the fact that it runs the custom rom MIUI which I have ran on several of my other devices. MIUI is an AOSP rom with a heavy IOS style skin. You can also install CM from Xiaomis dev team and root this device without voiding the warranty.
In my use the phone is cheaply built but super cheaply made. It is a notch above other Chinese phones when it comes to build quality. The screen is not the best i’ve seen but doesn’t suck. The phone was pretty laggy on first boot, but once i installed the available update things really sped up, and I didn’t really experience much lag at all. The cameras are usable, but are not really great. These cameras are not going to compete with other flagships in any way. This is a budget phone and for $100 it is actually a pretty great deal.
