At this point we’re all fairly confident Samsung will release the Galaxy Note 5 substantially earlier than their typical IFA announcement in September. We also know that the Galaxy S6 Edge+ will be announced along with the Note 5. Thus far several rumors have pinpointed August 12 as the unveiling of the Note 5, with retail availability in the United States set for August 21. This morning Korean news outlet Business Korea has corroborated the general timeline, claiming that Samsung will hold an event in New York on August 13 to unveil the handsets. Given that the two rumored dates are so close together, we should all mark our calendars and plan on a Samsung event in the second week of August!

In addition to the new rumored event date, several other Korean news outlets are reporting that Samsung will launch their Galaxy Gear A smartwatch alongside the Note 5 and S6 Edge+. The Galaxy Gear A will be the first round smartwatch from Samsung and is expected to feature a rotating bezel and digital crown similar to the Apple Watch. The Gear A is expected to run Tizen, just as the previous Gear watches have. I am a bit disappointed that Samsung won’t give us Android Wear in one of their signature smartwatches. In any event, I love my Gear S and will probably pick up the Gear A when it launches. We still expect all of these products to launch August 21 here in the US, so stay tuned to HOA for the latest Samsung news before, during, and after launch!

"I am currently a researcher and Adjunct Professor at Arizona State University and Grand Canyon University. I fell in love with Android with the Nexus One release and realized that it was superior to iOS in all the ways I care about. I still use a Mac (and an iPhone for the camera), but my Apple tech products pale in comparison to my number of Android devices (watches, tablets, and phones). When I’m not rooting/modding one of my many Android phones or doing math/programming, you can find me taking in Phoenix Suns/Arizona Diamondbacks games in downtown Phoenix, and drinking good beer!"
