High on Android IFA 2015 Preview

The annual IFA tradeshow in Berlin is one of the biggest events of year for Android fans. Along with MWC and Google I/O, it is one of the few events where we get several product announcements from multiple manufacturers. Since the show is this week and we’re all excited about it, I thought I’d do a quick IFA preview to get everyone ready for the action. Let’s take a quick look at what we expect to see this year at IFA from various OEMs:

1.) Huawei- We’ve been eagerly awaiting the release of the Huawei Watch since the original announcement earlier this year at MWC. The round Android Wear device has an elegant design that resembles a traditional timepiece more closely than any other smartwatch I’ve seen. Amazon prematurely outed the various models of the watch this past Friday, which Huawei was none to happy about. Huawei has already posted a teaser on Twitter that all but guarantees the announcement of the Huawei Watch at IFA. With prices for the watch leaked between $349 and $799, it won’t come cheap, but we’re ready for the launch.

Huawei is also expected to show off a phablet-sized phone at their event this year. The Ascend Mate 7 was leaked by Evan Blass on Twitter and looks ready for an official unveiled at IFA. Some have suggested that this phone may be a high-end offering and will drop the Ascend prefix for a more svelte name like Mate S. We will get the low-down on everything from Huawei at their big event on September 2.

2.) Samsung- IFA is typically the event where Samsung shows off the Note series, but this year they launched that phone a bit early. The early launch of the Note 5 hasn’t stopped Samsung from renting out the very large Tempodrom for their IFA 2015 event. We already know that Samsung plans to show us the Gear S2, but perhaps there are some other surprises up their sleeves. What those surprises could be is hard to say, Samsung has launched all flagship phones and the Tab S2 just started preorders in the US. Samsung will hold their event on September 3 so we won’t have to wait long to find out!

I fell in love with Android with the Nexus One release and realized that it was superior to iOS in all the ways I care about. I still use a Mac (and an iPhone for the camera), but my Apple tech products pale in comparison to my number of Android devices (watches, tablets, and phones). When I’m not rooting/modding one of my many Android phones or doing math/programming, you can find me taking in Phoenix Suns/Arizona Diamondbacks games in downtown Phoenix, and drinking good beer!"
