Samsung told us last month at their Unpacked event for the Note 5 and S6 Edge+ that they would fully unveil the Gear S2 at IFA in Berlin. Today Samsung got the party started early by showing of the Gear S2 fully and announcing all of the various models of the watch. The Gear S2 comes in a two models, called simply Gear S2 and Gear S2 Classic. Samsung says the Gear S2 Classic was “made for users who prefer a more timeless watch design, offering an elegant Black finish with a matching genuine leather band.” On the other hand the regular Gear S2 is “ideal for those who are on-the-go and have an admiration for minimal and modern design.” We also now have a full list of specs, summarized below:

While Samsung does mention that the Gear S2 variants include NFC, it is incredibly strange that there is no explicit mention of Samsung Pay in their press release. This leads me to believe that Samsung Pay compatability will not be available for the Gear S2 straight out of the box. The 250 mAh battery also seems a bit concerning, even for a variant without 3G capability. Samsung has not announced pricing or availability but did say that the Gear S2 version of the smartwatch will be available in either a dark gray case with dark gray band, or a silver case with a white band. The Gear S2 Classic will come in just one colorway with a black case and matching black leather band. So far, Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile and US Cellular have confirmed they will carry the S2 sometime this fall, but there are no details on pricing or exact dates from the carriers either. Samsung will have both variants of their smartwatches on hand at IFA so we should see some hands-on videos pop up later this week.

I fell in love with Android with the Nexus One release and realized that it was superior to iOS in all the ways I care about. I still use a Mac (and an iPhone for the camera), but my Apple tech products pale in comparison to my number of Android devices (watches, tablets, and phones). When I’m not rooting/modding one of my many Android phones or doing math/programming, you can find me taking in Phoenix Suns/Arizona Diamondbacks games in downtown Phoenix, and drinking good beer!"
