Qualcomm Announced Snapdragon 820-New X12 LTE Modem

In addition to the QuickCharge 3.0 standard unveiled yesterday, Qualcomm also announced the new Snapdragon 820’s laundry list of features. One of the signature features is the X12 LTE modem that is capable of producing download speeds up to 600Mbps and upload speeds around 150Mbps.

The new X12 modem is 33% faster than the X10 LTE modem inside the Snapdragon 810. The new modem also supports 802.11ac 2×2 MU-MIMO, “which fundamentally changes how Wi-Fi works, Snapdragon 820 can support Wi-Fi speeds that are two-to-three times faster in crowded areas.” It also will support 802.11ad WiFi, the logical upgrade to 802.11ac WiFi. The Snapdragon 820 X12’s LTE modem also has smart switching ability between WiFi and LTE to make seamless handoffs without compromising call quality. Hopefully this processor lineup is a bit “cooler” than the 810.

"I am currently a researcher and Adjunct Professor at Arizona State University and Grand Canyon University. I fell in love with Android with the Nexus One release and realized that it was superior to iOS in all the ways I care about. I still use a Mac (and an iPhone for the camera), but my Apple tech products pale in comparison to my number of Android devices (watches, tablets, and phones). When I’m not rooting/modding one of my many Android phones or doing math/programming, you can find me taking in Phoenix Suns/Arizona Diamondbacks games in downtown Phoenix, and drinking good beer!"
