If I were a gambling man I would bet on Motorola to be the first to update a device to Android 6.0 Marshmallow outside of Google. It looks like Sony may beat them. Most people in the US are clueless to the fact that Sony actually puts out some pretty decent handsets in the same way that just about no one knows that Lenovo makes phones. Sony has been another manufacturer who has played nicely with the mod community and has kept their Android skins mostly pure.
Earlier today Sony earned a few extra brownie points in my book by announcing that they have opened up 10,000 spots for Xperia Z3 and Z3 compact owners to beta test Android 6.0 Marshmallow. This is not the norm as most test software is run on a very limited amount of handsets until a super stable bug free version is ready for the masses. This is the version that is slowly soft launched. Normally though the soft launch is pretty much a final build, and is released to a small beta tester batch just in case any major bugs exists.
Either Sony has a build that is pretty far along already, or they are hoping that the more units that are running this software the quicker they will be able to squash bugs and get a release out. This would be a great program for other OEMs to adopt. The beta test will be available in Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland, Iceland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, United Kingdom, Ireland, and Germany. Install Sony’s Concept for Android app to join the beta.
