Cloud-Based Robin Smartphone Up for Preorder

Last month we told you a little bit about the Robin cloud-based smartphone from Nextbit. Today the phone officially up for pre-order from Nextbit for $399. The phone takes a cloud-first approach to storing and moving around your data and apps so that limited storage is a thing of the past. As for the specs, the Robin sports a Snapdragon 808 processor, 3GB of RAM, 32GB of onboard storage, 5.2″ FHD LCD display, 13MP rear-facing camera, NFC, Bluetooth, 2,680 mAh battery, dual front-facing speakers. In addition to the 32GB of on-board storage, you also get 100 GB of cloud storage. Nextbit says the Robin will run the “latest version of Android”, which hopefully means it will run Marshmallow out of the box when orders start shipping in February 2016.

Both the midnight and mint colorways of the Robin phone look appealing and the form-factor looks quite nice to me as well. The main downside to this phone is that it does not ship until February 2016, that’s 4 months from now…AKA an eternity in the tech and smartphone world. I thought about ordering the Verizon model last month, but ended up passing because of how dated the Snapdragon 808 will be in 4 months.

Anyone planning to preorder one of these?

I fell in love with Android with the Nexus One release and realized that it was superior to iOS in all the ways I care about. I still use a Mac (and an iPhone for the camera), but my Apple tech products pale in comparison to my number of Android devices (watches, tablets, and phones). When I’m not rooting/modding one of my many Android phones or doing math/programming, you can find me taking in Phoenix Suns/Arizona Diamondbacks games in downtown Phoenix, and drinking good beer!"
