After years of research and development and a few developer kits we finally have a consumer version of the Oculus Rift. Pre-orders for the virtual reality machine are finally live. The price is a very steep $599. It was expected to be much more attainable at launch. While the price seems way to high for something that only works with a capable PC. This is being sold at a Console price when it is really more of a peripheral.
All that being said the demand for this is there. The first batch sold out in only 15 minutes. Those will ship in March. If you didn’t make it to the pre-order early enough to get in on that first batch you will have to wait till April for yours to ship.
For $599 you get the Oculus Rift headset, sensor, cables, Oculus remote, an Xbox One wireless controller, and the games Lucky’s Tale and Eve:Valkyrie. If you don’t currently have a decent gaming PC you can actually purchase an Oculus bundle which includes both the Rift and a gaming PC for $1499. The pre-orders for this package go live next month in February.
I have to admit that the system looks pretty awesome, but I am not personally ready to drop $600 on it. Hopefully Oculus is setting this up for a Christmas $399 special later in the year!
