Samsung cannot seem to catch a break with the Galaxy S6 Series launch and subsequent rollout. A few days ago Shane brought you the story that the Galaxy S6 Edge suffers from a design flaw that causes the fast charge capability to fry the accelerometer and consequently disable auto-rotate on the phone. The Wall Street Journal has now released a report detailing Samsung’s acknowledgement of memory management issues in the Galaxy S6 that are known to cause frequent force closing of apps and other lag issues.
The WSJ articles claims that RAM is not being freed up when an activity lays idle, but rather each new app opened is consuming even more RAM with no previous RAM coming available for use. I’ve personally not noticed any major issues on my device, but I also tend to clear my app memory fairly often, and I do reboot my device once a day or so.
The memory issue itself could possible be more of an issue with the Android operating system and Lollipop. Since the release of Android 5.0, Google has been aware of a memory leak that causes similar issues. It is possible that the memory management problem is getting so much publicity now because the Galaxy S6 is such a popular phone used by so many people. Google has already begun the roll out of Lollipop version 5.1.1 to Nexus devices, which is said to fix the memory management problems. There are also reports that some Galaxy S6 owners on T-Mobile received 5.1.1 even before Nexus factory images became available! It is pretty clear to me that Samsung wants to fix any possible issues with their flagship as soon as possible, so stayed tuned here to HOA as we bring you any updates on this issue.
