In humble opinion, Hangouts is one of the laggiest apps on Android, which is sad considering it is a Google flagship app. The app crashes, lags, and overall makes for a pretty terrible messaging experience. Unfortunately, since most of my friends and family use Hangouts I continue to bear the pain and frustration. I was really looking forward to Hangouts 4.0, which promised an improved UI and faster experience, but that turned out to be a lie. With most things Google does, they seem to offer either a big UI refresh or stability tweaks, and 4.0 was definitely the former. Alas, today Hangouts 5.0 has arrived, promising the stability tweaks to go with our refreshed UI!
Google says this version of Hangouts is fixing the broken GIF support that happened in Hangouts v4.0. In addition, they also tell us to expect improved performance, less crashes, and way less lag…yay! Of course, this will be a slow roll out on the Play Store, so feel free to grab the APK below if you’re into the side-loading thing! I already threw 5.0 on a few of my phones so I’ll update this post to let you know how I’m getting along with it!
